The Learning Coach story began in 2007, when educator Irene Morrell found herself teaching classrooms filled with over thirty curious learners — each one bright, unique, and learning in their own way. Among them were children with exceptionalities, creative thinkers, and others who simply needed a little extra time or a different kind of support. Despite her dedication, Irene saw that some students were slipping through the cracks.
She didn’t like seeing any child left behind. Irene believed that every child is capable, curious, and deserving of success — without waiting for a diagnosis or a special program. She saw firsthand that many students didn’t struggle because they lacked ability, but because traditional methods didn’t always meet every learner where they were. That realization became her mission: to create a way of teaching that included everyone from the very start.
With this vision, Irene began combining the best elements of evidence-based literacy programs — the structure and multisensory approach of Orton-Gillingham, the phonemic awareness strategies of Heggerty, and the speech and sound articulation tools of Lindamood-Bell (LiPS). By weaving together each program’s strengths, she developed an integrated approach that supported all learners, not just those with identified needs.
Over time, this approach evolved into what is now known as Nanny Alphabetty’s Reading Academy — a joyful, inclusive way to teach that meets children where they are and helps them grow with confidence. The program is built on inclusion, adaptability, and the unwavering belief that when teaching strategies are designed for the most unique learners, everyone benefits.
As the program grew, Irene recognized that children connected most deeply when learning felt personal and fun. She envisioned a warm, familiar guide who could model learning, make mistakes, and remind children that it’s always okay to try again.
That vision inspired the creation of Nanny Alphabetty, a caring, wise, and sometimes silly puppet teacher who brings lessons to life. Through stories, songs, and play, Nanny models curiosity, patience, and perseverance — turning phonics and literacy into something children feel as much as they learn.
Today, The Learning Coach Program and Nanny Alphabetty work hand in hand — blending research-based instruction with creativity, connection, and joy. Together, they remind every child (and teacher) that learning is a journey, and everyone belongs on the path.
